Do I need insurance for an ice bath or sauna business?

Yes. Public liability insurance is the practical expression of your duty under the Occupiers' Liability Act, and the policy wording must explicitly include cold water immersion and sauna use, not just "gym". Employers' Liability insurance is compulsory by law from the first paid member of staff, including part-time and casual, with the certificate available to them. Contents and equipment cover at replacement value, with water damage included, is optional but sensible when a chiller costs thousands. After any claim the insurer asks for your risk assessments, certificates and maintenance records, so keep them somewhere you can produce them the same day.

Public liability

Wet floors, cold exposure, burns, slips and unsupervised use are the liability surface of a recovery room. Read the schedule: many wellness policies exclude immersion, saunas over a certain temperature or unsupervised use unless declared. Get cold water immersion named in writing and confirm the indemnity limit your landlord or host gym requires.

Employers' liability

The Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 applies the day anyone works for you. Display the certificate or keep it where staff can find it. Sole operators with no staff are exempt, but the moment a friend covers a shift for pay you are not.

What insurers ask for after an incident

The risk assessments (immersion, legionella, fire), the EICR, the water test records for the period, proof the daily checks were done and by whom, the service history of the equipment involved, and the incident record. Operators who can produce these the same day are treated very differently from those who cannot.

Questions operators ask next

Is employers' liability insurance required for one part-time member of staff?

Yes. It is compulsory from the first employee, part-time and casual included.

Does my gym's insurance cover my ice bath?

Only if the policy names it. Cold water immersion is commonly excluded unless declared; check the wording or arrange your own cover.
